Trip to Bayeax, Normandy France over President’s Day weekend 2008:
This is a picture of Mother Mary. It’s on the shore of Gold, the beachhead on the eastern coast. It was supposed to be destroyed, but the local villagers sawed her in half and buried the top. After the war, she was reassembled.
This is a tank that has been on the beach for more than 60 years.
One of mission objectives was to create a supply line for the allies. The allies created 2 bridges out of concrete. These are MASSIVE structures!
This is one of the bridges that was washed up.
A look in the English Channel. The bridge structure still remains. It was only operational for a few months while the allies established Cherbourg, France as the main supply hub.
There is a museum on Gold and this is where the 60th anniversary celebrations were held.
We (EVERYONE) thought this was a real bird…the only way that I know that it’s not is by the way the light is reflecting off of the porcelin seagull.
This is the monument on Omaha Beach where the Soldiers had their re-enlistment ceremony.
Someone put an American flag in the sand. I don’t know who or when it was done, but what a beautiful picture it turned out to be!
Crosses at the American Cemetary in Normandy, France.
A view of Omaha Beach from the Cemetary.
